Additional drag is also a result of the Z51’s increased downforce.
The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette’s top speed was one of its few remaining mysteries. But the Bowtie has now answered that question. With a starting price at $59,995, the new ‘Vette can travel 194 mph (312 km/h), which is quite impressive.
The Z51 Performance Package increases the engine’s output to 495 horsepower (369kilowatts) instead of the standard 490hp (365kW) but the maximum speed of the ‘Vette actually drops slightly. Chevrolet spokesperson Kevin Kelly told Motor1.com that the Z51 package lowers the top speed to 184 mph.
This is due in large part to the Z51’s more aerodynamic components, which include a front splitter and rear wing as well as a diffuser. These components combine to create more downforce that sticks the Corvette to a road surface. The pieces create more drag which slows the Corvette.
The Z51 package adds $5,000 to C8 Corvette’s cost and quite a lot of equipment. You get the performance exhaust, more aggressive suspension setup and electronic limited-slip rear differential. It also includes larger brakes.

Most buyers won’t be deterred by the reduced top speed of this package. Most people won’t take their ‘Vette up to the maximum speed. They will need to find a track that has a long straight so they can do it without going to jail. The Z51 option is for drivers who want to feel more aggressive behind the wheel.
The 2020 Corvette will be available in showrooms by the end of this year. It won’t take long for real-world testing to give a better idea of the C8’s capabilities once people get a hold of them.
