Ford claims that the crossover can reach speeds of up to 143 miles an hour.
The Ford Explorer Sports is gone. The 2020 Ford Explorer ST is its replacement. It’s a high-powered variant of the Blue Oval’s three-row crossover.
The Explorer ST’s 400-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 motor can propel it to a speed of 143 mph, according to Ford. The ST is equipped with the same 10-speed automatic transmission as the 2020 Explorer. Standard is all-wheel drive. Ford may offer a rear wheel-drive Explorer ST in future, so that we can fulfill our childhood dream of driving this three-row crossover with our families.
The six-cylinder engine’s extra power is appealing, but those looking for more lateral performance should check the box for the ST Street and ST Track packages. Each package adds 21-inch wheels, red brake brake calipers and better-performing brakes.
Every Explorer ST comes with a Sport driving mode. This adds weight to the power-steering systems, increases throttle response, modifies the transmission mapping and reduces engine noise.
The ST’s visual appeal is enhanced by model-specific cues like a black mesh grille and tailgate applique and special lower fascia, side-panel elements, and roof rack rails. The interior features a flat-bottom steering column, special floor mats, and more leather seats with contrast stitching.
Ford has not yet revealed pricing details for ST but we expect it will be among the most expensive 2020 Explorer trims. The high-performance model comes standard equipped with high-end kit like a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and trailer tow package. Ford’s Active Park Assist 2.0 automatic park system allows ST to park itself parallel and perpendicularly, without the driver having to intervene.
