The Explorer ST has darker touches than other next-generation SUV trims.
Another set of spy photos showing the 2020 Ford Explorer is here. This time, the test mule shown in the photos is the ST performance trim. The engineers at Blue Oval don’t cover the roof or the pillars as they did in previous images.
The ST has a darker mesh grille than the Explorer’s other grades. It also features a badge indicating the trim level. The headlights also have black accents. The Platinum version has a slightly different lower fascia treatment. It lacks the metallic trim.
All versions of the next-gen Explorer are very similar in profile. The ST’s most distinctive feature is its black seven-spoke wheels. This trim might have slightly larger brake discs.
The ST’s back has the same four-outlet exhaust system as the Platinum. The performance-oriented trim does not have the same metallic trim as the luxury model. This vehicle is being tested so it’s possible the trim piece might not fit.
Explorer ST reported that it uses the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 , which is derived from the Lincoln Continental or MKZ. The mill produces 400 horsepower (298kilowatts), and 400 pound-feet (in those cars), but Ford may make a more powerful version for its SUV.
Ford’s D6 platform is the next-generation Explorer. The base models will be rear-wheel-drive, but you can expect more expensive models like the ST or Platinum to have all-wheel drive. The powertrain details of models other than ST are not yet clear. However, the Blue Oval suggests strongly that plug in hybrids could eventually be made available.
