Official NHTSA document indicates Ford is trying to bridge the gap between EcoBoost and V8.
The Ford Mustang EcoBoost is far more powerful than the GT. They are separated by 125 horsepower. The Blue Oval may be developing a third version of the ‘Stang that will slot between the two versions of its beloved sports car. Hagerty discovered a document that was filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This document could be a hint about a Mustang mid-range model in the making for 2020.
The following document contains VIN decoder information. It shows that the 2020 Mustang has two versions of the turbocharged four cylinder 2.3-liter engine. The standard version of the turbocharged four-cylinder 2.3-liter engine produces 310 horsepower, while the “TBD” version produces 310 horsepower. Hagerty believes Ford is trying to increase the Mustang’s pony power to better compete with the Chevy Camaro and its 335 horsepower V6 engine.
Dearborn should find it easy to get more power from the EcoBoost engine, considering that the 350-horsepower FocusRS also uses the engine. This is speculation for the moment, but Ford has hinted that it may have something to offer. A Ford spokesperson stated that the automaker “is always elevating Mustang” and would share more exciting news in spring.
Ford can squeeze in a mid-range Mustang to fill the $8,960 gap.
We won’t be waiting long to see what Ford has in store for the 2020MY Mustang as spring is fast approaching. We are still waiting on the output numbers for the Shelby GT500 but “over 700 horsepower” sounds very appealing.
