The G80 needs to be replaced, and the new model gets a complete design overhaul.
The Genesis G80 was last seen in February. That test mule was pretty rough. The redesign has been highlighted in spy shots that give a better view of the new design.
The current Genesis G80 is basically a refreshed version the Hyundai Genesis before the creation the luxury brand’s nameplate. This test mule was a completely new vehicle. Although the camouflage hides the front fascia design of the sedan, it seems that the upper intake is larger than the current sedan. The new headlights have a dual-tier design. The nose also has a pair visible sensors, which suggests that the G80’s driver assistance system is sophisticated.
The sedan’s profile has a short front overhang, but a long hood. The sweptback windshield allows for a flowing roof, which leads to a teardrop-shaped rear. At this point, it’s difficult to determine if the back has a trunk layout or a liftback. A liftback design would allow for more cargo loading space, given the roof design. The camouflage seams suggest that the four-door may have a traditional trunk.
For now, the G80’s powertrain options are a mystery. The current model offers a 3.8 liter V6, 3.3 liter twin-turbo VR6 and a 5.0-liter V8 . Rumors claim that may add a hybrid option to the new model.
Genesis is still trying to establish itself. The marque sold 7,877 vehicles between January and July 2018. 6,144 of those were G80s. Comparatively, it did even better last year, moving 11,545 vehicles in that time frame. The G80 represented 8,987 of those cars.
