This is the most striking look we have seen so far from Stuttgart’s next SUV.
It has been a while since the AMG-spec Mercedes Benz GLE-Class was seen out and about. The refreshed SUV was able to avoid spy cameras since April, but the prototype was not so fortunate. We can also see that the camouflage has been removed from this prototype, which is a benefit to us. This gives us a better view of this high-performance people-mover.
According to the striptease, Mercedes will not be changing the GLE style book. The rear pillar has been stripped of all wrap and cladding. We can see that the profile of the new model will be slightly different, with the C-pillar being slightly rounder. Camo wrap does an adequate job of covering the rear lighting arrangements, but we know that the front has LED brows, similar to the EClass and, naturally, the Panamericana grille.
According to our sources, the GLE 63 will get the 4.0-liter biturbo engine that’s making its way into many vehicles from Stuttgart. It is unknown how much power this mill will produce in the SUV. Current thoughts are that it will match the 612 horsepower (456kilowatts), from the E-Class at least . A less powerful version of the straight-six engine will also be available, with around 435 horsepower (324 kW). We expect it to be called the GLE 53 and will be very exciting to drive.
Is there any information that has changed regarding the unveiling of the AMG SUV? We are moving into the final stages of development when camouflage is removed. This is likely to refer to the standard GLE Class, which we expect will be revealed in the coming months. The AMG variant, which is muscular and powerful, will still be available for purchase sometime in 2019, though it may arrive earlier than expected.
