2020 Mercedes CLA Shooting brake adds style and practicality

We don’t all want SUVs or crossovers.

The Mercedes CLA Shooting Brake is safe unless BMW releases a 1 Series Touring, or Audi with an Avant A3, but that’s not what the premium segment needs. The second generation of the compact wagon by Daimler will feature a stylish body that is in line with the regular CLA. The new version is 48 millimeters longer than its predecessor and 53mm (2.1in) wider than the previous. However, it’s a bit lower (-2mm) to allow for a sportier look.

Production begins:

The new CLA Shooting brake offers more elbow room for front and back passengers. It’s up by 35mm (1.37inches) and 44mm (1.73inches), respectively. Strangely, the wheelbase has been extended by 30mm (1.18inches), but front legroom has decreased by 1mm and rear legroom has only increased by 1mm. The swoopy roofline was tweaked to allow for an additional 8 mm (0.31 in) of rear passenger headroom. Those in front, however, have an additional 9mm (0.35 inch) to enjoy.

The A-Class’s most practical member, the CLA Shooting Brake, can hold up to a lot of cargo. The CLA Shooting Brake now has a volume capacity of 505 Liters (17.83 cubicft) or 10 Liters (0.35 cube feet) higher than it did before. The load compartment’s depth and width have increased significantly, similar to the tailgate’s opening width. This means that it will be much easier to load and unload cargo.

The new CLA Shooting brake gets all the goodies we’ve seen in the A_Class sedan and hatchback, as well the CLA and B-Class minivan. It’s packed with all the latest tech Mercedes has to offer, including adaptive dampers and the MBUX infotainment systems.

The CLA 250 will be the range-topping model for the moment. It features a turbocharged four cylinder 2.0-liter engine with 225 horsepower and 350 Newton meters (258 pound-feet of torque) channelled to the wheels via an automatic seven-speed dual clutch gearbox.

Customers will be able order the car with any of the gasoline or diesel engines from the A-Class or CLA-Class families. The European market launch is set for September. There will be a CLA 35 Shooting Brake that produces 302 horsepower and a CLA 45 Shooting Brake that produces 383 horsepower and 416 horsepower in the CLA 45 S.

During this time, the CLA Shooting Brake will make its debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
