Only 3,000 hot hatches will be produced.
Mini released the first teaser photos of the John Cooper Works GP, which will go on sale in 2020. The production-ready hot hatch was first shown off in September 2017 by a name-brand concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It features a prominent roof-mounted spoiler with the “GP” lettering. Another teaser shows the dual exhaust system, flanked with the diffuser, letting everyone know that this is an upgrade to the JCW. The alloy wheels are unique to this model.
Update:
The Mini’s fastest and most powerful road car is yet to be revealed. However, the British marque claims that the new GP will boast more than 300 horsepower from a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It will be interesting seeing how much power it has considering that the Countryman and Clubman JCW are rumored engines to boost to 300 horsepower by adapting the BMW X2 M35i engine.
Check out these spy shots.
Mini will likely make a number of upgrades to the GP version, in addition to its more powerful engine. The concept used lightweight materials to reduce fat, so it’s possible that the GP will eat a different diet than the JCW. The suspension and brakes will be tweaked, and the chassis will be sportier to allow the hatch to be more agile and responsive in corners.
Mini wants to recall the previous-generation JCW GP’s Nurburgring lap times of 8 minutes 23 seconds. This could be a sign that the new one will also tackle Green Hell, in an attempt to cut down on seconds.
Mini intends to launch the market in 2020, and Mini will only make 3,000 copies.
