2020 Smart EQ forTwo and EQ forFour Revealed with Cosmetic Changes

The Forease styling concepts are used to give the tiny EV a more elegant look.

Smart decided to give up the internal combustion engine and focus on an electric future with the unveiling of the Final Collector’s Edition in May. Daimler, parent company, and Chinese automaker Geely reached an agreement to form a 50/50 joint venture. The goal is to develop the brand’s troubled brand. However, the current EQ ForTwo/EQ ForFour will be getting a nip. This refresh draws inspiration from the 2018 Forease+ and 2019 Forease+ concepts. The headlights are redesigned with full-LED optional headslights.

A new front grille is used to hold the Smart badge, which has been removed at the bottom of your hood. The pint-sized EVs now have a different front fascia to make a subtle distinction between the four- and two-door models. Smart has made the LED taillights more funky by giving them a rhombic theme. Customers can upgrade the ForTwo with either the Carmine Red or Gold Beige colors for the tridion cells and the body. The latter is also available in a new lime green color. ForFour includes the Ice White color for the tridion cells and the body panels as well as a Steel Blue for the body.

The interior of the 2020 SmartEQ ForTwo or EQ ForFour has been redesigned. It features a large storage area that can be covered with the roller cover. It’s located in front of your gear selector and can hold even the largest smartphones. You can also use the removable dual-cupholder to store two coffee cups. The new infotainment system, which features an updated user interface with an 8-inch touchscreen, is another major improvement inside the cabin. Smart wants to highlight that the ForTwo as well as the ForFour have the largest interiors for their respective sizes. The reconfigured center console also improves functionality. The tiny EVs use an electric motor with 80 horsepower (60 kilowatts), 160 Newton-meters (118 pound feet) of torque, just like their predecessors. The ForTwo can run 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in just 11.6 seconds, the ForTwo Cabrio in 11.9 seconds, and the ForFour in 12.7 seconds. The top speed of all three is 81 mph (130 km/h). It has a range between 159 km (99 miles) thanks to the 17.6-kWh lithium battery. But, keep in mind that it is part of the New European Driving Cycle.

This means that the range of the cars between two charges will likely be lower in real life, but Smart claims it is enough to cover “several hundred times the daily average kilometers in Germany.” It takes approximately three and a quarter hours to recharge the battery using the 230V socket. However, with the optional 22kW onboard charger, it takes less than 40 minutes to go between 10% and 80%. The new electric-only Smart lineup will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show starting next week. It won’t be going to the United States, where Daimler has decided to retire the brand.
