It would be an understatement to say that the Toyota Supra was a long wait considering all the teasing and delays. There will be no more previews, images, hearsay, or race cars. This is the real deal. We’ll be able to see it live within hours of the Detroit Auto Show.
We have to admit that there isn’t much secrecy about the matter. BMW We are eager to see the Supra powered by the Supra and find out if the coupe is worth the hype. Five years ago, the FT-1 concept was a glimpse into the design of the fifth generation model. However, it has been a little more refined than you would expect from a road-going vehicle.
Although the Supra will be launched initially as a coupe model, Toyota does not rule out the possibility of introducing the convertible at a later stage in the model’s lifespan. We know that the Supra will come with an automatic transmission in left-hand-drive cars, but those who live in RHD countries may get the Supra with a manual drive.
A more powerful engine will likely be added to the hardcore SupraGRMN. The straight-six 3.0-liter BMW engine is also found in the Supra’s redesigned Z4 roadster. It shares many of the hardware. Toyota’s version may also borrow from the latest BMW interiors, as evidenced by spy shots.
Back to engines. In July 2018, Supra’s chief engineering engineer, Testsuya Taka, revealed plans to build a four cylinder engine. This will allow for “much more weight distribution.” However Toyota already confirmed that the Supra will have perfect 50/50 distribution (and LFA matching body rigidity), so it will interesting to see his intentions. The four-cylinder model, which is likely to be powered also by BMW, will be more affordable.
You can see the 2020 Toyota Supra live at the Detroit Auto Show starting at 2:40 PM GMT/ 9:40 AM ET during a presentation that should take about 30 minutes
