2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Gets Mazda 2 Bones

It will be on display at the 2019 New York Auto Show.

April Fool’s Day may seem like a strange day for an automaker, but Toyota believes this is the right time to announce the 2020 Yaris Hatchback. The timing of the reveal is perfect in some ways. This Toyota-badged hatchback, with its large front grille, is actually the Mazda 2 subcompact that is not sold in the United States. However, the new Yaris will be available at dealer lots from sea-to-shining sea. 2020 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Gets Mazda 2 Bones

This was what we suspected. The current Yaris sedan was revealed last year at New York Auto Show. Toyota and Mazda have already collaborated on it. Toyota revealed this year the North American market was being excluded from the previous Yaris Liftback, which was actually a completely different car than the sedan. The new Yaris Hatchback uses the same Mazda-based bones as the sedan. It has a 1.5-liter four cylinder engine that produces 106 horsepower (79 kilowatts) and is sent through a standard six-speed automatic transmission.

The Yaris is also available in LE or XLE trims and comes with a wide range of standard equipment. Exterior features include 16-inch aluminum wheels, chrome exhaust tips, body-colored power windows, fog lights, and body-colored mirrors. The 7-inch touchscreen will be available for both the driver and the passengers. It also features voice recognition, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Standard equipment includes a rear backup camera and a variety of safety systems, including automatic emergency brake.

Toyota is proud to brag about the Yaris Hatchback’s maneuverability. This includes its 32.2-foot turning circle, and 161 inch overall length. Toyota also draws attention to the car’s “bold and cab-rearward” design, even though these are all features of the Mazda 2 upon which it is based. Toyota’s front fascia is unique with its hexagonal grille and gaping aperture is the only thing that distinguishes it.

Toyota has not yet provided any information about the pricing or availability of the new Yaris Hatchback. However, the automaker intends to display it at the 2019 New York Auto Show.
