This dress ups the entry-level 28i model to go out on the town.
BMW still uses the tried-and-true method of creating special edition models. You can create a special model by simply adding a new set of wheels and blacking out the trim. This is the core of BMW’s X2 Edition M mesh, but there’s more.
The package’s purpose is to upgrade the 28i entry-level model. The mesh is not in some strange interior trim but in the new M Mesh kidney grille, which will be available on the M235i in November. This package includes items that are normally included in the M Sport X package. It will migrate to the X2 package. This package includes gloss black mirror surrounds and black trim for side pillars.
Inside, the X2 gets M Sport seats with integrated headseats. These are normally reserved for the sporty X2 M35i. The M Sport steering wheel comes with paddle shifters and more black trim for leather seats. The greenhouse features an Aluminium Hexagon trim, Pearl Grey Chrome accents and Edition-branded door sills that identify the X2 as unique.
The powertrain remains the same, meaning that the turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder engine produces 228 horsepower (170kilowatts) for the U.S. market. The eight-speed automatic transmits power to the front wheels of sDrive28i models or all four on xDrive28i. Although it’s not an instant tarmac runner, the 0-60 mph times for all-wheel-drive models are in the low six seconds range.
BMW claims that the Edition M Mesh package will add $3,550 to base price for the X2 and is only available on 28i models. It will be available from November 2020.
