This could explain the rumored price reduction.
The new-for 2020 Ford Explorer had already been suffering from declining sales before the coronavirus pandemic. The automaker could make some changes to improve the situation. However, they fell 26 percent in 2019. According to Ford Authority, the automaker will increase the number of trims available by two. They are called Timberline and King Ranch.
You may be familiar with the King Ranch name. This trim is popularized by the F-150, but Ford also uses it in the F-Series and Expedition. Although the publication does not have details on what the trim will include, it is expected to be luxurious and tech-savvy like other King Ranch models. The King Ranch package will be available on the 2021 F150. However, it includes all the leathers. The current-gen truck still has the upgraded features of a Bang & Olufsen stereo system and heated rear seats.
Timberland’s trim might not be a complete secret. Ford Authority thinks the Explorer’s partially camouflaged text Explorer spotted recently isn’t the FX4 initially thought. The publications indicate that it is the Timberline. Spy photos revealed that the SUV was trying to conceal what appeared to be a unique grille. However, the most telling sign that this was something special where the beefy tires were. We don’t know.
It is possible that the new trims are a way to increase sales. reported earlier this year that the 2021 Explorer would see a price drop. Some trims will receive huge discounts over their 2020 counterparts. Ford could reduce the price of the Platinum trim by $3,700, but that could be Ford’s attempt to make room for Timberline and King Ranch, which could easily become top-tier trims based on their standard features. We will wait for Ford to announce it soon.
