An already excellent package has seen major improvements.
The next-generation Cup car, alongside the 992 Porsche 911 GT3 streetcar has kept people on the edge. The German automaker was the world’s top-selling race car, and they did a great job.
While there are many improvements made to the car’s design, the most significant is the power. The 4.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine is still used, but the unit has been increased to produce 510 horsepower (375kilowatts) instead of the 485 hp (3661.664 kW). It produces more grunt than its predecessor, but synthetic fuels can be used to produce that power, greatly reducing CO2 emissions. Purists will be pleased to know that the exhaust configuration is the same, making one of the most distinctive sounds in motorsport.
There are significant improvements in aerodynamics, mechanical grip and power. It sits on the 911 Turbo’s wider body, which is a first for GT3 cups. The rear measures 1,902 millimeters wide, which is 28 mm more than the previous model. The same goes for the front-axle at 1,920mm. This new configuration allows for 12-inch wide front rims and 13-inch back rims. It is a very common setup for GT racing, which provides optimal handling and driving ability.
The German automaker also sought to improve performance and made the car more affordable for teams. The economic aspect of the development series is crucial, as it gives smaller teams the same chance of success as big teams.
Jan Feldmann, project manager, said that the striking appearance, improved suspension and clever solutions for electrical details were key factors in this success. It’s the most powerful Porsche Cup car ever built, thanks to its optimized cockpit and improved performance.
Delivery to teams will start in February next year, as the new car will be used for the 2021 series in Cup racing around the world. The racing car of tomorrow can now be raced for EUR225,000 ($272,511).
