2021 Toyota Highlander XSE Shows Its Sportsy Side in Chicago

This is not just an appearance package.

Toyota will be launching a major assault on the 2020 Chicago Auto Show, complete with trucks and SUVs. This athletic Highlander is one of many special editions to the Tacoma and Tundra. It’s a new XSE model – a first Toyota three-row crossover – that promises a little more street cred for family outings.

The standard Highlander has some noticeable changes in appearance. You’ll see a lot of black trim on the headlights and roof rails. There are also side-mirror caps and window trim. The grille and lower fascia are also included. These components have been redesigned for the XSE. The fascia received a larger intake and a chin spoiler. The XSE-specific headlights and rear exhaust tip are also available. No sport package is complete without carbon fiber trim and exclusive wheels outside. The interior is completed with a red and black trim.
The XSE, however, is and not purely an appearance upgrade. Toyota has adjusted the suspension slightly to improve street poise. The V6’s 3.5-liter engine still produces 295 horsepower (220kilowatts). To give the electric power steering a more sporty feel, it has been recalibrated. The XSE is also available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, which can send 50 percent of its power to rear wheels.
