It now matches its segment competitors in certain markets.
The Toyota Hilux was teased and leak several times earlier in the year. Now it’s time to reveal the official details about this long-running pickup truck.
The 2021 Hilux is launched in Thailand’s home market, Thailand. It was built for ASEAN and Australian markets. The midsize pickup’s engine has been updated to almost a skin-deep.
The 2021 Hilux will get a more powerful 2.8 diesel engine. It now produces 201 horsepower (150 Kilowatts) as well as 369 pound-feet (599 Newton-meters). This engine can be used as soon as 1,600 rpm. This puts the Hilux in direct competition with the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Chevrolet Suburban. However, the power output of this 2.4L diesel variant is unchanged. Other than the output updates Toyota It also claimed that the Hilux’s idle speed was reduced from 850 to 680 RPM to improve traction and fuel economy. Also, the suspension has been upgraded. The shock absorbers are now more powerful and the structure of the leaf springs has been improved.
The updates inside aren’t spectacular, except for the 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay. However, safety features have been upgraded for the midsize truck. The Hilux now includes Toyota Safety Sense, with the exception of the proximity sensors. The safety toys include the precollision system and dynamic radar cruise control.
While availability in other markets is not known at the moment, Thailand will see customer deliveries this month. A GR Hilux is also in production, so be on the lookout for that one.
