2021 Toyota Supra 4-Cylinder Introduces 255 HP and 200 Less Pounds

It’s the lightest Supra ever – and it’s headed for the U.S.

Toyota stated that it had no plans to build a four-cylinder Supra, even though the company had registered the car for CARB Certification in California. It was understandable that offering both a Toyota 86 and an entry-level Supra felt too good to be true. The good news is that these plans have changed.

The Toyota Supra 2.0 is the base version of the beloved sports car. It now features a turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine instead of the optional inline six. The inline-six is still available – with more power. Today, the company unveiled the updated Supra 3.0 Supra 2.0 to accompany the Supra 2.0. This announcement was made ahead of the Daytona 500’s Nascar debut.

The lighter the better

The same engine that powers the Supra 2.0 is also used in the BMW Z4 sDrive30i. The inline-four engine is powered by a twin-scroll turbo and produces 255 horsepower (190 Kilowatts) as well as 295 pound-feet (405 Newton-meters). Supra 2.0 is paired to the same eight speed automatic as the six cylinder model. It can reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 5.0 seconds. The engine will then continue to maintain a maximum speed of 155 mph (295 kmh).

The Supra 2.0 is also lighter. The Toyota Supra 2.0 is 200 pounds lighter than its six-cylinder counterpart. This brings the total curb weight of the vehicle to 3,181 pounds (1.442 kilograms). The lightest Toyota 86 weighs in at 2,776 lbs (1,259 kilogram). The Supra 2.0 swaps out the four-piston brakes for single piston caliper brakes. It also removes the active differential for a fixed setup and the active suspension for a fixed setup.

Safety features such as adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and parking sensors are only available to customers who have purchased the Safety and Technology Package. It is not known how much this option will cost. The package includes wireless Apple CarPlay, navigation and a 12-speaker sound system. These features are standard on the six-cylinder Supra.

We don’t know much about the price. The Supra 3.0 will see a slight increase in price over the 2020 model’s $49.990 MSRP. So expect the Supra 2.0 costing more than $40,000 without options.

Affront of the Competition

Although we don’t yet know the price, the Toyota Supra 2.0 joins an established segment. Customers cross-shopping will be most successful with four-cylinder versions of the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. Jaguar F Type and Porsche Cayman are all available in four-cylinder models. You might also want to consider other outliers such as the six-cylinder Nissan 370Z or the Supra’s sibling the Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ. Look at the horsepower of each car, the 60 times they produce, and their weight.

The Toyota Supra 2.0 is not the lightest or most powerful of the group. The Mustang has the most torque, but the Nissan 370Z (the only six cylinder option) provides the most horsepower. The Toyota 86, weighing 2,776 pounds, is the lightest. The Supra is the only option in the group without a manual transmission; it uses the same eight speed automatic as the six-cylinder model. We will have to wait for official details from Toyota about the Supra 2.0 in terms of pricing. Here’s how the Supra 2.0 compares to its competitors in terms of price.
