2022 Acura NSX TypeS Will Be The Mid-Engine Supercar’s Swan Song

After a five year run, the NSX will be gone at the end 2022.

Good news and bad news, folks. After the return of the sporty badge on this year’s TLX sedan, the 2022 Acura NSX will receive a Type S model. Unfortunately, the NSX Type S is the end of production for the second-generation supercar. It will be retired in December 2022.

Acura has not yet provided much information about the NSX Type S, but it will be unveiled at the Quail, A Motorsports Gathering on August 13th (part of Monterey Car Week). Some teaser images showed some differences between the Type S model and its less-stylish sibling. The red engine cover is immediately noticeable, which has been a hallmark for performance-oriented Honda products and Acura products. The NSX is sharper and has darker exterior accents like matte black door handles, a gloss black rear spoiler and a Type S logo on its rocker panel.

The current Acura NSX was put on sale in 2017 and is powered by a standard hybrid engine and torque vectoring technology from the automaker. The original model has a V6 in the middle of the driver. This V6 is 3.5 liters in displacement and is supplemented by a pair turbochargers and an electrical motor. It’s sandwiched between the engine, the nine-speed dual clutch transmission, and the engine. Two front-mounted electric motors, one per wheel, provide all-wheel drive through-the-road. The total system output is 572 horsepower (427 Kilowatts) & 476 pound-feet (676 Newton-meters).

We can’t imagine Acura allowing the Type S to surpass 600 hp (447 kW) and 500 lbft (578 Nm) and cut a few tenths of the regular NSX’s 2.7 second sprint to 60 mph. The Type S may also be capable of hitting 200 mph, which is a significant increase from the current supercar’s 191-mph. The hybridized supercar will have a variety of suspension and chassis modifications that allow it to maximize the power boost. This includes firmer dampers and a lower ride height. It also has ultra-sticky tires that can take on the track. The NSX Type S will be available in a trim-specific exterior colour, possibly the matte grey seen on the microsite. Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Center, Marysville, Ohio will build the 2022 Acura Type S. Production will be limited to 350 units for Japan, and 320 for other markets. In December next year, Acura will end production of the NSX and replace it with other supercars that offer the same “joy of driving”.

The second-generation NSX was a similar example to the original. However, it featured unique ideas that would be spread to more expensive cars. The NSX’s three-motor hybrid system made it more efficient than its slinky form and wild performance. This opened the door to electrified supercars such as the Ferrari 296 GTB. The modern NSX, like its predecessors, is spacious and comfortable, with the same good ergonomics as its SUV and sedan siblings. Acura, for its part, promises other electrified sports cars will be coming soon. We can only hope that those new products will find their way into our hearts as the NSX did.
