Rear-wheel driven and ready to face the cold.
It’s hard to believe that the new BMW 2 Series Coupe will arrive soon. We’ve seen many spy photos of this coupe since last year. However, it’s the first time we’re seeing the 2er doing cold-weather testing in Sweden.
This prototype is not the base 2 Series Coupe we saw in December. It looks very similar to the M Performance model we saw at the Nurburgring in September 2020. The dual exhaust pipes can be seen here, as well as a subtle lip spoiler and a little bit of design aggression hidden beneath the heavy wraps.
The orange side markers located near the front wheels indicate that BMW is testing the US-spec version.
According to reports, the M240i moniker will not be used for the new model. It could be replaced by M245i to highlight a power boost. We won’t be surprised to hear that a power boost will be announced at launch.
Bimmer enthusiasts would be thrilled to learn that the 2 Series Coupe will continue to be rear-wheel-driven, as opposed to the 2 Series Gran Coupe. This is presumably to reduce production costs.
The BMW 2 Series Coupe will likely be launched in this year with the M Performance models being the main headline. As of writing, there is no exact date but we will be keeping an eye out for any new announcements.
The full-fledged version of the M2 is not expected to arrive this year, but you can hope for a sooner debut, perhaps in the first half this decade.
