The high-performance i4M50 makes its debut.
BMW has now announced details about its i4, and X electric vehicles in the United States. Both models will be available in the first quarter 2022.
The i4
The i4 is the first electric sedan to be available in the US. It comes with two powertrain options. The eDrive40, which is rear-wheel-drive, produces 335 horsepower (250 kilowatts), and 317 poundfeet (317 Newton-meters) torque. In 5.9 seconds, it can reach speeds of 62 mph (100 km/h) The battery’s gross capacity is 83.9 kilowatt-hour, while the usable capacity is 81.5 kWh. BMW estimates that the battery can drive 300 miles (483 km).
The M50 all-wheel-drive is another option. Each axle is equipped with an electric motor that produces 536 horsepower (400 kW) total. BMW has not yet released the torque figure. In 3.9 seconds, the sedan can reach 62 mph. The eDrive40 uses the same battery, so the range is 245 miles (394 km).
The i4 can be charged on a Level 2 wallbox using AC power at 11 Kilowatts. This can replenish the battery up to 100 percent in just 8 hours. The electric sedan can be charged at up to 200kilowatts using a DC fast charger. It takes just 10 minutes for the car to recover 90 miles of range.
BMW did not give a glimpse inside the i4 at its initial presentation of the model. However, the company now has more information. The 12.3-inch information screen and the 14.9-inch control display share a frameless bezel, making them appear as one entity. The infotainment system runs iDrive 8 software, and can be updated over-the-air.
The base price for the i4 eDrive40 is $55,400 and the M50 at $65,900. Both will be subject to a $995 destination charge.
The iX
The 2022 iX xDrive50 will suit you if you prefer crossovers over sedans. The model has two electric motors, each producing 516 horsepower (385kilowatts). However, the torque figure is not yet available. The model can reach 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds. BMW estimates that the range is 300 miles (483 km). Prices start at $83,200 (plus $995 destination).
The iX is powered by a battery that has a total capacity 111.5 kWh. 106.3 kWh are usable. It can be charged at 11 kilowatts using AC power and takes less than 11 hours to reach its full capacity. A DC fast charger can reach up to 200 kW, can provide 90 miles of range in just 10 minutes and go from 10 to 80 per cent capacity in only 40 minutes.
An optional adaptive air suspension will be offered on the iX. The system can raise the body up to 0.8 inches (20.3 mm), while Sport mode lowers the vehicle by 0.4 in (10.2 mm).
The iX is a new take on BMW’s design language. The layout has been simplified by 50 percent less buttons and switches. The driver holds a hexagonal steering column that has a glass effect.
A standard panoramic glass sunroof is available with electrochromic shading. There are three options for upholstery: a standard panoramic glass sunroof with electrochromic shading, a microfiber/wool mix, and two shades of olive-leaf tanned leather.
The crossover features a 12.3-inch information screen and a 14.9 inch control screen. It is similar to the i4’s i4. It is compatible with iDrive 8. It runs iDrive 8.
BMW confirms that a new, more powerful iX M60 will be available for future introductions. It has a maximum power output of 600 horsepower (447 kW).
