2022 BMW X1 Exercises Its Legs at The Nurburgring in Latest Spy Shots

The development of the smallest, highest-riding Bimmer is still ongoing.

The BMW X1 hasn’t been selling well in the US compared to luxury subcompact SUVs like the Lexus UX and Mercedes-Benz GLA. Bavaria is planning to completely revamp its small high-rider in 2022.

The prototype testing of the next-generation X1 was successful. It was seen at the Nurburgring this time.

The new model looks bigger than ever. This is not surprising. The front-wheel drivetrain will be the most likely, with higher trim levels and performance versions getting the xDrive all wheel-drive. The spy photos show a model with an internal combustion engine. This is confirmed by the absence of the yellow sticker and second filler door.

The upcoming X1 has received a lot of information. The first is that the X1 will be available in an all-electric model, the iX1. This version will be available alongside the standard gasoline and diesel powertrain options. BMW confirmed this in a long press release last year. It stated that the third-generation X1 would arrive with both a combustion engine as well as a fully-electric drivetrain.

BMW has also confirmed that the company’s Regensburg, Germany plant will produce the new X1. The iX1 is the first fully-electric vehicle to be manufactured at this plant. This is consistent with the automaker’s plans to produce an electric vehicle in every one of its German factories.

Is the fully electric X1 going to jumpstart sales? We will only know in time, but we will likely find out within the next two years or when BMW launches the subcompact SUV.
