Despite the disguise, some of the changes are easily visible.
BMW now has the combustion engine removed from the X3 in order to create the purely-electric iX3. The next task is to upgrade the luxury crossover that was previously powered by a conventionally-powered engine. Since the third-generation model (G01), has been in existence for approximately three years, it makes sense that the Bavarians are now testing the facelifted version.
Our spies captured the X3 LCI with camouflage at its front and back. This is a good thing since mid-cycle changes are often limited to new bumpers and lights. This is exactly what the test vehicle had. Even though the fascias were covered up, the updated taillights and headlights could be seen through the makeup.
The corporate grille will also be changing, but it seems that BMW won’t go down the HTML3/ HTML4 route of installing two oversized kidneys. We are looking at the X3 with its small wheels and round exhaust tips. However, the M40i and full-fat X3M will also be getting cosmetic updates.
This is a facelift, not a new generation. So don’t expect any major changes to the compact crossover. BMW will likely update the iDrive and trim options in the cabin to stay competitive against the newly facelifted Audi Q5 as well as the next generation Mercedes GLC in 2021.
We are not expecting an official reveal of the X3 facelift this year, as this is the first time we have seen it. We expect a European debut in 2021. This will likely translate into the United States’ 2022MY.
