It’s affordable and it’s fun.
Although people are still willing to spend more on a car, not all new cars need to break the bank. You don’t have to sacrifice the enjoyment of driving. You can do the opposite. The new Honda Civic Si and Toyota GR86 cars are fun to drive and start at less than $30,000. Which car is faster? Throttle House’s new video reveals the answer.
The Toyota is a clear winner over Honda. The GR86 coupe is rear-wheel-drive, while the Civic Si four-door powers the fronts. The engines send power to the front wheels via a six-speed manual. However, they differ in their outputs. The Civic Si is powered by a turbocharged 1.5 liter four-cylinder engine. It produces 200 horsepower (149 Kilowatts) as well as 192 pound-feet (261 Newton-meters) of torque.
The GR86 has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with naturally aspirated 228 hp (170), but only 184 lb-ft (249 NM) of power. The Toyota has another advantage: its weight. The Toyota is two doors smaller than the Civic, but it’s less than 200 lbs lighter at 2,811 pounds (1.275 kg) and 2,998 lbs (1.360 kg). In the first race, the coupe’s increased horsepower and lighter curb weight were immediately apparent. The Toyota had a slight advantage off the line. After some wheel hop, the Toyota pulled ahead of the Civic. The GR86 pulls and pulls the Civic, leaving it further behind.
Although the second race begins at a roll, it doesn’t handicap the two-door. Although the start is more even between them, the Toyota pulls away with each shift. Although the Toyota didn’t win the race by the same margin as in the first race it finished ahead of the Honda by several car lengths.
Although the Toyota GR86 and Honda Civic Si are not directly competitors, they both offer affordable performance. Although they come in different packages depending on your preferences, the results are the same – big smiles behind you.
