It is not surprising that the patent images are telling the truth.
The Honda eleventh-generation Civic was introduced last month. It showed only the sedan prototype, while also announcing a hatchback. The five-door CivicXI forum has spotted the model, which is hiding its slightly different body. It appears to be slightly shorter than the sedan, and matches those leaked patent photos from September.
We get the impression that Honda is going for a fastback look with the new Civic hatch. We think of the Hyundai i30 Fastback because of its general shape. This blurs the lines between a sedan or a hatchback. The rear end configuration is reminiscent of the Accord Crosstour. However, we think it is better on the Civic Hatchback.
It’s obvious that the spoiler lip is integrated into the vehicle, despite the disguise. Although the prototype hides the tailgate light strip, we are not sure if it will be functional. The Civic prototype featured a rear wiper, as you would expect from hatchbacks.
The angular exhaust tips are noticeably more aggressive than the Audi RS-like oval setup of the 2022 Civic Sedan Prototype. This is because the hatchback appears to have inherited the 19-inch alloy wheels. As the front end design will likely be copied from the four-door model, it is unlikely that any secrets are kept.
The hatchback and sedan Civics are likely to live on for another generation. However, the coupe is not. Honda has dropped the two-door model, as well as its Si derivative. There’s a Type R hatch and a sporty formula for the sedan. This is the silver lining. Since Honda has recently stopped making compact cars with all-wheel drive, the new Civics won’t have it.
The official debut of Honda’s 2022 Civic Sedan will take place in the first quarter 2021. We also hope Honda will introduce its hatchback companion.
