The don’t-call-it-a-minivan is now not much different than an SUV.
The Kia Carens was launched in 1999. It is now entering its fourth generation. The “Recreational Vehicle”, which was unveiled in India today, uses rugged styling cues that are derived from crossovers to attract customers who want the added practicality of a minivan. It’s basically built on the same platform as the Seltos. The headlights and taillights look a lot like the latest Sportsage. While the chunky plastic cladding at the wheel arches reflects the Carens’ outdoor-oriented profile, you are not the only one thinking this. The vehicle’s nearly flat roofline allows for maximum headroom within the cabin, where it will be available with six or seven seats. For the middle row, there will be captain’s chairs in the former configuration.
It measures 4540 mm (178.7 in) in length, 1800 mm (71.1 in) in width, and1700 mm (66.7 in) high. The wheelbase is 2780 mm (109.5 in), making it the longest of its kind in its segment. It is a little longer than its predecessor, but it has a much wider interior thanks to the increased distance between the axles. It is about the same width as the model it replaces, but a lot taller. The exterior and interior have been completely redesigned. The new Kia model looks modern, and it is a combination of a fully digital driver’s screen with a touchscreen 10.25 inches for the infotainment systems. There are still separate controls for climate and other functions, but they can be accessed quickly using traditional buttons.
The new Carens has 64-color LED ambient lighting and an air purifier. It also features ventilated front seats. The Carens also supports over-the-air updates, an eight-speaker Bose audio system, as well a sunroof and select drive modes. There is also a variety of standard safety kits: Hill-Assist Control and Brake Assist System, Downhill brake control, and many more. It can also be equipped with automatic windscreen wipers and front parking sensors for an additional fee. The engine is the same as the Seltos locally available, specifically a 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 115 horsepower and 140 Newton-meters (106-pound-feet of torque). The turbocharged 1.4liter unit delivers 140 horsepower and 242 Nm (179lb-ft). A 1.5-liter diesel engine is also available, rated at 115 horsepower and 250 Nm (184lb-ft). A base gas engine comes with a six-speed manual transmission, while a turbo-mill model has a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The diesel engine sends power through a six speed torque-converter automatic. The all-new three-row Carens from Kia will be available in India and other markets starting Q1 2022.
