2022 Mercedes AMG SL Final Teaser Reveal

2022 Mercedes AMG SL Final Teaser Reveal

This is something we don’t often say, but a new SL has finally (almost).

The Mercedes-Benz SL is gone. The Mercedes-Benz SL is dead. Long live the AMG SL. The R231 will be retired after a decade to make room for the new Sport Leicht, which was developed by Affalterbach’s skilled people. Tomorrow will be the official debut of the AMG GT Convertible replacement. This gives the three-pointed star plenty of time to sneak in one more teaser to increase the excitement for the big day.

We can finally see the SL’s sleek styling, which is in keeping with Mercedes’ latest products. AMG’s new 2+2 roadster will feature a fabric roof. Hardtops are heavy and take up more space when folded. The new two-door sports carriolet will feature a Panamericana grille as well as a quad exhaust. This makes sense, considering that even the smaller “45” models have them. The 2022 SL was created from scratch and has nothing to do the GT Roadster. It’s the first SL with all-wheel drive. Mercedes claims that the car is compliant with its safety requirements in the case of a crash.  The bodyshell of the Bremen-built SL is only 270 kg (595 lb) without the trunk lid, doors and hood. AMG claims it will be stiffer and have a lower center-of-gravity for better handling on twisty roads. We don’t know much about the engines but expect the twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V8 at the core. A plug-in hybrid may be added later.

The prototypes were spotted with a charging port in their rear bumper, in the same vein that the AMG GT 63 E Performance. So an electrified SL may only be a matter of time. It is not yet clear if it will be able to produce the same output as the 4-Door Coupe. This car produces a staggering 831 horsepower (620 kW) and 1,033 lbft (1,400Nm), making it the most powerful Mercedes-Benz road-going vehicle until the One hypercar arrives in 2022. Tomorrow morning (GMT) we will have the livestream online. Later, all the juicy details about the SL will be revealed.
