2022 Mercedes-AMG SL – Less Camouflage Than Ever

The quad exhausts point to a spicy version.

With the rise of electric vehicles and SUVs, it seems risky to invest money in a convertible with a combustion engine. Mercedes is smartly combining the AMG GT Roadster, SL and SLC into a single model. The Sport Leicht, one of the oldest cars in the three pointed star’s lineup, is being prepared for the next generation.

AMG developed the roadster from day one. The soft top will allow for weight reduction and better cargo carrying capacity. The prototype was near production and featured an exposed red fabric roof and a strangely placed rear license plate. Our spy had close encounter with it. This is because the German license plate, which was placed on the rear bumper of the car, doesn’t fit in. It appears that the license plate belongs to a US-spec vehicle judging from the smaller recess.  It is difficult to see the rear end clearly due to the camouflage. However, it appears that the license plate holder has two humps. The new SL may be getting the bulky growths that were seen on the Bugatti Chiron in the United States. These protrusions are there to protect against fender benders at low speeds.

The quad exhausts indicate that we are dealing with a hot version the new SL. The deployable rear spoiler can be seen clearly, as well as the door handles that look very similar to the new S Class. The Panamericana grille is visible almost entirely on the front, and the large air vents are hidden beneath a mesh camo pattern.

Mercedes camo on A-pillars is a guess as well as ours. You can also see a different disguise at the top of the windshield frame, where you will find the roof. Camo covering the front fender hides the V8 and 4Matic (or 4-Matic+) badges. Black tape under the passenger door may conceal wires that are being tweaked and measured last-minute before the big debut. The 2+2 roadster, which is slinky and stylish, should debut in the next few weeks. It has been teased several times. According to reports, only the entry-level model (potentially called SL 43), will be equipped with rear-wheel drive. All other models will have AWD. It is believed that the range-topper will be a plug-in hybrid version with approximately 800 horsepower from a twin turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine and an electric motor. However, this remains to be confirmed.
