Expect 831 horsepower below the hood.
It appears that Mercedes AMG has figured out how to fit a hybrid powertrain in the next-generation SL. Our friends at Motor.es have taken new spy photos of the new model in a camouflage wrap. This was the same wrap it had dropped in its recent spy photos. It is possible that the extra covers are due to the fact that the car is hiding the powertrain.
The fenders are not likely to show evidence of the SL’s powerful engine. The charging port for the car is located under the passenger-side taillight in the rear bumper. Although it’s difficult to see the charging port in the camouflage swirls of black-and-white, the location is not too surprising. Mercedes introduced the Mercedes AMG GT 63 E Performance earlier this year. It had its charging port cap in the same sport.
Although it is not clear how Mercedes packaged the whole system, it may be too ambitious for them to try for the same one in the AMG GT63 S E Performance. The powertrain combines a twin-turbocharged 4.0 liter V8 with an electrical motor to produce 831 horsepower (620 kilowatts). It also produces 1,033 poundfeet (1.400 Newton-meters) of torque. This might not be enough for the SL’s smaller dimensions. Although the engine will be smaller, it will still produce plenty of horsepower. Rumours suggest that the SL plug-in hybrid will combine a turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder with an electrical motor to produce a powerful 578 horsepower (425 kilowatts). The new-generation SL will have a hybrid powertrain and a nine-speed auto gearbox. It replaces the AMG GT Roadster and the previous-generation model. The next-generation SL will have all-wheel drive. Mercedes may call it the SL 53E Performance. AMG made a huge splash with its first electrified car, so there are high expectations for the new SL now that the performance brand is in charge of its development.
