Slowly, the 300 SL ideology successor is taking shape.
2021 is the year Mercedes-Benz unveils a new generation of its SL. We mean “brand new” literally. New design, new technologies and new powertrains. These spy photos show the latest progress in the roadster’s development.
Mercedes has finally begun to test cars that are less hideous than the prototypes. Although the car still has a full-body camouflage, some parts are now more visible than ever.
The radiator grille at the front is partially visible, while the lower bumper section shows the diffuser’s gentle effect more clearly. The fake ducktail-shaped spoiler at the back is gone, resulting in a cleaner and more sleek appearance. We can’t confirm if this is the final configuration, but we have seen a different quad exhaust arrangement on this prototype.
The new SL will incorporate a design that was inspired by the original 300 SL and advanced powertrains, as well as chassis technologies developed by AMG. The SL’s development will be the first time that the brand’s performance division has been involved. Affalterbach is believed to be developing a variety of engine options, including a flagship plug in hybrid variant.
This model is tentatively called 4MATIC+ hybrid. It will combine a V8 twin-turbo engine and an electric motor to produce 800 horsepower (596kilowatts). The system also produces 738 pound-feet (1,096 Newton-meters) of torque. The SL63, which is a twin-turbo V8 engine with no electric support, will provide a purer experience and a peak power output of 612 hp (453 kW).
Mercedes has been testing prototypes of the new SL in slightly more camouflaged environments. This shows that the company is making progress and should have a complete debut this year. However, sales won’t start until 2022.
