According to Nissan, a high performance Nismo version is being developed. However, the new Nismo model that was unveiled today is an SUV and not a coupe. Some might be surprised to learn that the redesigned Patrol (pictured below), has been in existence for about five years. The new Nismo model is an SUV.
It’s the sixth-generation (Y62), Patrol, which has been around for a decade. Don’t expect it to be an all-new model. However, it would preview the US-spec Armada. Spy shots show that the SUV will sport a more aggressive body kit, with red accents, while still using the 22-inch RAYS forged tires from the previous facelift.
The 2022 Nissan Patrol Nismo’s engine should be the same naturally-aspirated 5.6-liter V8 that produces 428 horsepower, or 28 more than the standard model. The original version of the Nissan Patrol Nismo was launched in 2015 with Bilstein shock absorbers. Although it is still a heavy and large SUV, the body was reinforced to improve steering response.
The Nissan Juke received the Nismo treatment, as it was also offered in a spicy variant with 218 horsepower and the option of front- or all-wheel drive. Even a bizarre Juke-R was available with the GT-R Nismo engine producing 600 horsepower. However, only a few vehicles were made at nearly $600,000.
Although these models might seem like a cash grab by putting the Nismo badge onto SUVs, it’s not the only one doing it. Keep in mind that many automakers have included SUVs in their product portfolios. The performance SUV category is alive and well, with premium brands like Audi Sport, BMWM and Mercedes-AMG, as well as mainstream brands like Volkswagen through its R division or SEAT’s Cupra.
