It will once again be twinned to the Toyota 86.
The first-generatio Subaru BRZ, a small coupe that was well-known for its impressive handling abilities, was ceased production at the end July. Subaru did not give any details as to when its successor would arrive. A teaser image on social media shows that the world premiere for the “all new” sports car will be held this fall. This could indicate that the rear-wheel drive coupe will be unveiled in November.
The new BRZ was once again paired with the Toyota 86. However, it was not on the Los Angeles Auto Show’s list of debuts prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. We have one teaser image of the wheel design and some details about the camouflaged body for now. The ventilated arches cool the front brakes, while the ten-spoke wheels appear to be borrowed from the Toyota GR Yaris.
Subaru will only reveal this information for now, with no details regarding technical specifications. Although there have been conflicting reports about whether turbocharging will be available for the BRZ or 86, the latest information suggests that the dynamic duo will continue to use a naturally-aspirated powertrain. Subaru FA24 flat-four engine, 2.4-liter flat-four with 217 horsepower (162 Kilowatts), and 177 poundfeet (242 Newton-meters) torque is expected to be fitted to the cars. This is slightly more than the 2.0-liter unit that’s rated at 205 horsepower (152 kW) as well as 156 lbft (211 Nm), torque (or 151 Lb-ft with an automatic gearbox).
Customers will be able to choose from either a 6-speed manual gearbox that was carried over from the previous model, or a new automatic designed for sports cars. Toyota stated that the new 86 would be easier to drive than the Supra. This would make the BRZ more enjoyable behind the wheel.
Toyota’s version of the 86 was captured in traffic back August with similar proportions and fully redesigned rear and front fascias. Camouflaged prototypes look more like a refreshment of the original bones than a new development. This would also be true for the BRZ. Subaru claims that its next BRZ will be “all-new”, so we are getting mixed signals.
We won’t have long to wait to see the BRZ with a fall debut. We can only hope that the 86 will soon follow.
