Subie is already working to develop accessories and STI performance components for its new sports coupe.
While all eyes are focused on the 2022 Toyota GR 86, there is also news on the BRZ front. Subaru officially opens orders for its rear-wheel-drive coupe this week in Japan. While that’s not newsworthy, it is worth noting. The Toyobaru duo’s second half is being teased already in JDM specification, with several factory add-ons.
If you feel that the BRZ isn’t aggressive enough, the Japanese version can be had with a carbon-fiber rear wing and 18 inch BBS forged wheels. Subaru also offers a front garnish, a beefier front spoiler lip and sportier rear skirt as well as additional aero enhancements.
You can also swap out the obvious rear wing to get a subtler trunk lid spoiler. Subaru also offers a performance exhaust system. However, it isn’t clear if the BRZ has more horsepower than the stock model. The second-gen model features a larger 2.4-liter engine that produces 228 horsepower for the US model. This is slightly less than the JDM-spec BRZ which has 232 horsepower.
You’ll instantly notice an upgrade when you open the hood. It’s not the turbocharger that people have been requesting for years. An optional flexible V bar can also be purchased at an extra cost. This will increase rigidity and improve handling, especially in corners. The trim piece at the front of the intakes houses an additional set of LED daytime running lamps.
When the Toyota GR 86 is released in Japan, we expect it to offer similar factory upgrades. While it is uncertain whether these goodies will be offered on the North American version, you can be sure that there will be hotter variants later in its life cycle.
We don’t expect any price changes for the BRZ, which is expected to arrive in the US this fall. The BRZ could be slightly more expensive than the current model ($28.845). This minor price increase will likely reflect in the GR 86’s starting price, which is increasing from the current $27,060 sticker.
