A minor mid-cycle update is given to the popular SUV.
The Subaru Forester is due for an update. The fifth-generation model isn’t even old. It was launched in 2018 as a 2019 version. But, SUVs move fast and Subaru is introducing a new Forester face for the 2022 model year.
These spy photos are our first glimpse at the new model. As you can see, there will not be many changes. The front is where most of the action takes place, with a new grille and fascia as well as headlamps. It’s hard to see the exact changes, so camouflage does a good job. The grille has a mesh design, and the wide split that bisects the Subaru oval suggests that the hood may be slightly different. The large chrome bar around the Forester logo may shrink or disappear during this update.
We don’t think the headlights will shrink, despite other automakers following the “smaller is better” trend. Although the overall layout is similar, some stylistic differences should make them stand out from the current model. We expect new LED driving lamps to be lower in the fascia. Moving further back, the camo wrap on either side doesn’t seem like a trick. To give the SUV a more rugged, bulkier appearance, the new Forester could have wider trim. We don’t see any camouflage at the back of the vehicle, as we don’t notice any changes to the current-day model.
Interior changes are not yet known. Given that the fifth-generation model is still relatively new, it’s unlikely that there will be any major updates. While it is possible to make minor adjustments to the trim and add some tech improvements to the greenhouse, they will likely remain exactly as they are now. The powertrain currently features a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine connected to a CVT. However, rumors suggest that a turbocharged 1.8-liter mill may soon be on the horizon.
This is our first sighting of the Forester, so an official debut is not in the cards. Subaru will likely remove the Forester’s wrap in the middle of 2021 just in time to allow 2022 models to arrive on dealership lots.
