Although the small hatchback was updated in every way, it still uses the bones of the older model.

Many were disappointed when Suzuki unveiled the third-generation S-Cross in Europe late last years. It was basically an updated version. The Baleno hatchback, which was introduced this week in India, is a slight refresh to its predecessor. After scoring zero stars in Latin NCAP’s crash test, the small hatchback made headlines in November 2021.

It’s called a “full model change” by Suzuki, but it’s clear that it still rides on the same bones. The hatchback is billed as a premium hatchback with a larger front grille. The new headlights feature three-point DRLs and are flanked by the redesigned taillights. It is distinguished from the Baleno by its larger fog lights and wider C-shaped rear taillights, but its overall appearance is unchanged.

The interior of the 2022 Suzuki Baleno features a nine inch infotainment mounted atop its dashboard. This was done after the air vents were moved lower to the center console. It’s affordable, but it still offers some niceties such as a 360-degree camera or a color head up display. The new features include better seat cushioning, lower levels of NVH, and air vents and USB ports to assist rear passengers.

The engine is powered exclusively by a naturally-aspirated 1.2-liter gasoline motor with 90 horsepower and 113 Nm (83lb-ft). You can choose between a 5-speed manual or CVT-replacing automated manual transmission for the four-cylinder engine. Both offer better fuel economy. The suspension has been improved and the 14-inch disc brakes are now standard.

In India, Suzuki has sold over 1 million Baleno units. It’s also available in a rebadged Toyota Glanza. It’s also known in several African countries as the Toyota Starlet. We wouldn’t wager on the return of the car in Europe, where it was discontinued in 2020 after poor sales.
