Both receive a suspension lift as well as 16-inch TRD tires.
While we wait for the next generation full-size Tundra, Toyota is upgrading the Tacoma to meet the 2022 model year. The TRD Pro and Trail Edition cater to off-road enthusiasts and include a number of mechanical and visual improvements.
What’s new in 2022MY? The TRD Pro suspension lift raises the height of the truck by 1.5 inches in front and 0.5 inches back. The rugged truck boasts a 36.4-degree approach angle, a 24.7 degree departure angle, and a 26.6-inch breakover angle thanks to Fox internal bypass shocks that have been TRD-tuned. These are Toyota’s claims of superior performance to the 2021 Tacoma TRD Pro.
TRD forged upper control arms provide additional rebound stroke and suspension travel. The 16-inch black wheels fitted with Goodyear all-terrain tires and chunky Goodyear rubbers are another novelty. Toyota has replaced the TRD Pro upper door badge with a black “Tacoma”, which is mounted lower on the door.
The updated Tacoma TRD Pro gets an exclusive Electric Lime Metallic paint and hood graphics. This is in addition to the blacked out hood scoop. Toyota will sell the truck in Midnight Black Metallic or Magnetic Gray Metallic if you find this too vibrant.
The Trail Edition was introduced for 2021MY and is a Double Cab 4×4 with a standard rear locking differential. The Trail Edition features a retro-flavored front grille featuring bronze lettering, and 16-inch wheels with the same bronze finish. The suspension lift of 1.1 inches front and 0.5 inches rear gives it a 34-degree approach angle and 23.6-degree departure angle. It also has a 26.4 degree breakover angle.
Along with Super White, Army Green and Midnight Black Metallic, Lunar Rock will be joining the 2022MY color palette. The Tacoma Trail Edition is similar to the TRD Pro. It comes with black badging and hood graphics. Both versions have a color-keyed rear bumper that matches the rest of the truck. It uses the TRD Off Road grade’s undercarriage skid plates.
Both versions of the midsize truck will go on sale in the fall. Pricing is not expected to change significantly from the 2021 Tacoma which retails at $44,325 and $37,080 respectively for the TRD Pro, which sells for $44,325 and the Trail Edition, which retails for $37,080 with 4×4.
