The ID.4 Pro can now travel an EPA-estimated 280 mph on a single charge.
It is hard to believe that the Volkswagen ID.4 was launched over a year ago. The electric SUV debuted in September 2020. It had modest performance and a starting price of $40,000, with a maximum range limit of 260 miles. VW states that the ID.4’s EPA-estimated range of 280 miles is possible in 2022.
This applies to the ID.4 Pro model that has rear-wheel drive. VW also announced that the Pro all-wheel drive model has an estimated range 251 miles. The ID.4 Pro S RWD trim has a range of 268 miles. AWD models can go 245 miles per charge. All ID.4 models come with an 84-kWh battery pack, regardless of the drive. RWD ID.4s come standard with 201 horsepower (150kilowatts), and an extra motor for AWD generates a total 295 HP (220 kW)
Volkswagen did not provide any explanation for the increase in range in a press release. We reported in January that minor changes were made to the ID.4 for 2022. These changes included unspecified hardware and software changes. For 2022, a 135-kilowatt-powerful onboard charger is available. However, specific updates to the battery are not known. It’s not clear if the range testing process has changed for 2022.
Motor1.com reached out to Volkwagen to clarify the increased range. A VW spokesperson explained that the increased range is due to “minor refinement of component maturity such as more refined fit-and-finish over time in production.”
VW has announced a partnership with Electrify America to sweeten the ID.4 deal for 2022. This agreement gives ID.4 owners 30-minute free charging sessions for three-years, with unlimited usage. However, the vehicle’s price has increased slightly. The 2022 ID.4 starts from $40,760. This price does not include a $1195 destination fee. This is $765 more than 2020.
