2022 VW Taos Basecamp Revealed with Off-Road-Inspired Looks

In just two weeks, you can go from a concept to a production package.

Volkswagen has unveiled the Taos Basecamp concept two weeks ago and is now introducing it in production. It’s actually a part of the new accessory line for the Taos, but not a separate model.

Basecamp’s treatment is unchanged from the Taos Basecamp prototype. It includes aggressive front and back fender flares with integrated splashguards, lower door sideplates and a Basecamp badge grille. Volkswagen claims the visual accessories give the crossover a more complicated look than it actually is. You can get the Basecamp components separately except for the grille badge which is only part of the complete kit. The total package will cost $999 more than the Taos.

Comparing the Taos Basecamp concept to the Taos Basecamp concept reveals some differences. The production version does not include the chunky off-road tires that were featured in the concept. The orange accent lines above the side skirts and on the front fascia are also missing. The concept came with a Thule Canyon XT custom Thule Canyon XT roofing basket, which featured off-road LED lighting.

Volkswagen will also be offering a variety of accessories to enhance vehicle protection, in addition to the Basecamp package. Rubber and carpeted floormats are available, as well as an extra rear bumper guard to prevent damage from the bumper during loading and unloading.

Hein Schafer (Senior Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy, Volkswagen of America) explains that the Taos makes an impressive first impression. “Our goal is not to improve on the vehicle’s dynamic exterior design but to provide customers with a wide range of accessories that meet their specific styling and functional needs.”
