2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale With 272 HP as Brand’s First PhEV

Tonale also offers a turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 256 horsepower.

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is the first electrified model of the Italian brand. It features a plug-in hybrid powertrain that allows for the use of an electric motor in the United States. In the first quarter 2023, this compact crossover will be available in North America.

Below the Hood

The Tonale will come in the USA with two powertrain options. The plug-in hybrid option consists of a turbocharged four-cylinder with a 1.3-liter engine and a six-speed auto for turning the front wheels. The rear wheels are powered by a 121-horsepower (90 kW) electric motor. The total system output is 272 horsepower (203 kW).

The PHEV is equipped with a 15.5-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery. Alfa Romeo estimates that the range of the PHEV when it is powered solely by electric power is over 30 miles (48 km). A level 2 charger takes 2.5 hours to fully charge the battery.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine is also available. It produces 256 horsepower (191 kW) as well as 295 pound-feet (405 Newton-meters). The engine can be switched from an automatic transmission to an all-wheel drive system using a 9-speed manual.

The Tonale will be available in the USA with two 1.5-liter mild hybrid powertrains. Europeans will have a diesel option.

What It Looks Like

The traditional shield-shaped grille Alfa has created for the Tonale’s front features. It is flanked by standard full LED headlights with running lamps that create three elements each side. The styling of the tail lamps matches the front illumination. The classic Alfa-style look of the phone-dial-style wheels is reflected in their design.

Below is a table showing the Tonale’s physical footprint.

Length 178.3 inches (4.53 metres)
Width 72.4 inches (1.84 m)

Standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch digital infotainment cluster, and a 10.25 inch infotainment display. The Uconnect5 software suite supports over-the air updates. It supports wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The system supports Alexa home to car and car-to–home communication with smart phones.

Safety Tech

The Tonale has a wide range of standard safety features. These include adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian detection.

Buyers have the option to upgrade to level 2 autonomy, which adds features such as traffic jam assist.

There are three models to choose from

The Tonale will be available in three trims in the US. Sprint is the entry level model. It only has the turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine. The Ti at the middle of the lineup can be ordered with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or the 1.3-liter plug in hybrid. Only the PHEV is available for the Veloce, which offers a range-extending performance. Pricing is not yet available.

NFT: The Tonale

Alfa Romeo will be launching a new program in partnership with Tonale. Each vehicle will be equipped with a non-fungible token, (NFT), which will initially register information such as the vehicle’s options and color. The NFT will be transferred to the owner upon vehicle purchase.

There, Alfa can update the NFT when the Tonale is at the dealer for maintenance or service. This will allow for a digital record of the vehicle’s history. The brand won’t reveal with which company it’s partnering to create these NFTs at this time.

The company claims that the NFT can be used to increase residual value of used vehicles, as there will be permanent records of maintenance history.

If owners don’t wish to have their Tonale’s data tracked by an NFT, they can opt out.
