After five years of being on the market, the BMW X7 – Bavaria’s largest, boldest and most popular SUV – will be getting an update. BMW designers have updated the X7 for 2023 with a sportier front and a few minor changes to the rear. Inside, the cabin has been redesigned with the most recent technology.

Bold New Look

BMW has split its traditional headlight fixture into two for 2023. This dual lighting arrangement will become the standard for full-size BMW models and eventually the 7Serie sedans.

The X7’s LED running lights are located near the hood, while the actual headlights reside lower on the bumper. BMW claims that this design is meant to highlight the X7’s upright stance. The xDrive40i model’s lower fascia has a shiny new silvery trim that extends from the bumper base. Meanwhile, the kidney grille is updated with darkened slats and a brighter, chrome surround. A Cascade Lighting element is now available in the grille, just like Rolls-Royce.

The gloss black treatment is used on the sportier X7M60i, which has no chrome. The lower vents and kidney grille are blacked, while the headlight fixtures are darkened with a sheen to give them an aggressive look. As you would expect, there is an M badge on the left side of the grille.

BMW has added 14 colors to its palette to match the bold new styling. Sparkling Copper Grey metallic – pictured here on xDrive40i – is one such new hue. M Marina Bay Blue metallic, as pictured on M60i, is another. Other BMW Individual finishes such as Ametrin and Dravit Grey II, Tanzanite Blue II and Frozen Pure Grey are also available.

Optional BMW M 50 Years emblems are also available for X7 buyers. Looks something like this. For the first time, BMW has made 23-inch wheels available. The standard 21-inch wheels of the xDrive40i base model are used by the M60i, while the M60i uses 22-inch alloys. The top-end model comes with the BMW Individual light-alloy 23-inch wheels.

More base power

The 2023 X7 offers two engine displacements, a base 3.0-liter Inline-six and an optional twin turbocharged 4.4-liter H8. Both engines now have a 48-volt mild hybrid assist. The base inline six has received a significant boost of 40 horsepower and 52 pound-feet more torque. This gives the X7 xDrive40i a total output 375 hp, and 383 lbft. The X7 xDrive40i is now capable of reaching 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

Twin-turbo V8 still produces 523 horsepower and 553 lbft, enough to propel the M60i to 60 in just 4.5 seconds. The Alpina XB7 is the most powerful model in the range. It produces 630 hp, 590 lbft and a tweaked twin-turbo engine V8, which propels it to 60 in 4.0 seconds. This allows it to reach a maximum speed of 180 mph. The X7 2023 model also includes an eight-speed automatic transmission with a launch function.

The new X7 features BMW’s iDrive8 infotainment system. iDrive 8 is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14.9-inch touchscreen. It’s the first time that a gas-powered BMW has it. Until now, iDrive 8 was available only on the electric iX or i4.

The iDrive 8 interface has a new interface compared to the 7 and features a sleeker interface, a streamlined home screen, additional features, and a more modern interface. Voice and gesture control are also carried over from the older model.
