This is our first look at next-generation model.
GM’s midsize pickup trucks need a major overhaul. The current-generation Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon were first introduced in international markets in 2012. However, the Chevy was not released in North America until 2014. The sibling, the GMC, followed one year later. A complete overhaul is now in progress.
These photos show a GMC Canyon prototype, parked somewhere in Colorado’s mountains. It’s the first time that either the next-generation Chevy midsizer or GMC midsizer has been seen in public. As you can see, GM does not want anyone getting too close. As our spy photographer entered the truck for close-ups, we quickly pulled out a cover and draped it over the vehicle.
Although the covers conceal body lines, it is clear that the mid-size formula will not be altered. Although the grille details are not visible, the proportions indicate that this model has the wider face of the GMC Canyon. The AT4 model is evident by the large fenders and low suspension height. The photographer gets up close to the tires and shows a set 265/65 Goodyear Wranglers with 18-inch wheels. Although the tires aren’t as aggressive than those on the AT4, they will be before production starts.
These photos aren’t able to give us an accurate view of the interior. We haven’t heard much about it. The newly unveiled Chevrolet Silverado shows that both the Canyon and Colorado will get larger infotainment screens in a greenhouse that isn’t quite as chunky or dated. The design will not be as minimalistic as some cars, but there should still plenty of buttons and knobs to control various features. Technology-wise, Super Cruise won’t be able to make it to the midsize fleet. However, we have learned that you can never know.
GM will likely offer only one four-cylinder engine option for power. This is similar to the Ford Ranger. The turbocharged 2.7-liter GM engine is the best candidate, producing 310 horsepower (231 kilowatts), and would comfortably outperform its Blue Oval rivals by a few ponies.
For the 2023 model year, the next-generation Canyon or Colorado is expected. This means that the next-generation Canyon and Colorado will likely debut in the early-to-mid 2022, barring any delays caused by COVID or microchip-related delays.
