2023 Honda Civic Type R sets Suzuka FWD lap record before Reveal

The new Civic Type R has outperformed the Civic Type R.

The new Honda Civic Type R already holds records even before it is officially revealed. The five-door, compact Honda Civic Type R went around Japan’s Suzuka Circuit in just 2 minutes and 23.120 seconds. To give you an example, the hardcore Limited Edition model took 2 minutes 23.993 seconds for the same task. Although it’s not a significant improvement, the time taken to complete the task is still impressive.

Both times, the hatchback was able to lap the 5.8-mile (3.6-mile) race track. The upcoming Civic Type R, like its predecessor Renault Megane RS Trophy -R had a rolling start. We are referring to a front-wheel drive car that reached 143.5 mph (or 231 km/h) at one stage during the hot lap.

Honda has mysteriously blacked out the instrument cluster to prevent prying eyes from finding juicy information about the car. The new Type R, which will use a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and is manual-only, will look a lot like the Civic Si. The turbo four-pot is likely to produce a little more power than the FK8 model with its 316-hp punch.

It’s interesting to note that the CTR had 316 horsepower in Europe and Japan, while the CTR from Japan made 321 horsepower elsewhere. Other regions were forced to use 10 horses. As hybrid rumors are unlikely to be true, the new car will likely be Honda’s last ICE-only vehicle on the Old Continent.

Honda will need to be concerned about a rival when the Civic Type R arrives later in the year. Toyota has finally launched the long-rumored GR Corolla. The VW Golf R is available with 315 horsepower and more power. In 2022, the next-generation BMW M2 as well as the Nissan Z will be available. This is a promising year for enthusiasts.

Although the footage is from the Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix, Honda chose to wait until now in order to show the CTR in action.
