It can be either the “55”, or the “63” top-dog model.
The new Mercedes SL Roadster, which was developed by AMG, was unveiled at the end October 2021. We didn’t have long to wait to see its coupe sibling. The fixed-metal roof version was captured testing in the cold last week. Now our spy spies have returned with more intriguing spy shots. The round exhaust tips suggest that the original prototype was a six-cylinder model. Today, however, we are dealing with a V8 version.
The back of the new has the quad exhausts that we saw on the twin-turbo V8. The 4.0-liter engine produces 476 horsepower (350kilowatts), and 585 horsepower (430 kW), in the flagship model “55”. The next-generation AMG GT Coupe will have identical numbers. The three-pointed star might decide to spice it up later in its lifecycle, culminating in a new Black Series.
To match the official images of SL 63, the prototype captured in northern Europe features chunky brakes and gold calipers. The new coupe, despite being camouflaged heavily, already looks more sleek than the model it will replace. The new coupe will likely be lighter thanks to the elimination of the bulky folding roof mechanism, and possibly the removal of the cramped rear seats from the roadster.
The Coupe will be more sporty than the SL, which will appeal to those who want a grand tourer. AMG will do much more than replace the roof and maybe remove the back seats before calling the day. The iconic roadster will get all-wheel drive for the first time. We are eager to see if the Coupe will be able to sport the 4Matic badge. It would be lighter than the cabrio if it was RWD.
It is expected that the official unveiling will take place before 2022. AMG may prioritize V8 models first, as it did with the SL. Rumours also suggest that a hot range topper, the “GT 63 S E Performance”, will be available with over 800 horsepower. It is similar to the AMG GT-4-Door Coupe plug in hybrid. However, engineers may not be able to fit the PHEV system into a smaller vehicle.
