Mercedes launched the new-generation GLE in September 2018. It seems that the three-pointed star was eager to update the luxury SUV mid-cycle. The prototype was seen making a U-turn downtown Stuttgart. It had very minimal camouflage so it is possible that the cosmetic changes to the vehicle will be kept to a minimum. The test vehicle may have been missing some of the more recent bits, but that could not be necessarily the case.
Mercedes may be looking to update the GLE’s headlights and taillights by placing the disguise, but it is not something to brag about. The front grille looks different. It features vertical slats that are somewhat similar to the AMG and Maybach models. However, this prototype is a regular Benz. Although the designers made some minor adjustments to the center section of front bumper below the license plate (but they are subtle).
Although interior spy shots of the GLE prototype are not yet available, from certain angles we can see that the screen layout is the same as the GLE prototype. It would be too drastic a change to adopt vertical touchscreen from the newer Mercedes models. However, we are fairly certain that the infotainment will be updated.
This is the first batch spy shots. Expect an official announcement soon. It could be revealed in the latter half of next year, or early 2022. The vehicle will then travel to the United States in 2023MY. The EQE SUV will also be available next year as an electric companion for the GLE. This model will ride on an EV platform, which was introduced earlier this year with EQS.
