2023 Toyota Highlander Gets a New 265-HP Turbo Four-Cylinder

Higher trim levels have two 12.3-inch displays for instruments and infotainment.

Toyota Highlander 2023 will be equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine to replace the naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6. The new engine produces 265 horsepower (198 Kilowatts) as well as 309 pound-feet (419 Newton meters) of torque. This is in contrast to the 295 hp (220kW) and 263lb-ft (357Nm) produced by the previous powerplant.

Toyota states that the Highlander’s fuel economy is the same as V6 but has lower NOx, NMOOG and CO2 emissions. The six-cylinder engine’s 5,000-pound (2.268-kilograms) weight is also carried over.

The 2023 Highlander’s Limited and Platinum grades now have two 12.3-inch displays. The instrument cluster used to have a 7.0 inch screen. Dual Bluetooth phone connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are all possible with this tech. These trims also come with standard power-folding sidemirrors.

On the XLE or XSE trims, larger displays can be added. These models have a 7.0 inch display in the instrument cluster, and an 8.0 inch monitor for the infotainment. These trims now include an optional hands-free power liftgate.

The 7.0-inch screen replaces the 4.2-inch one for the L and LE grades.

A re-located wireless charging station is now located in the interior. It can be found on the shelf right next to the infotainment screen.

The Highlander Hybrid has no powertrain modifications. A total of 243 horsepower (181kilowatts) is produced by the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two motor-generators. It can tow up 3,500 pounds (1.588 kg) and returns 36 MPG combined fuel economy.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ is standard on the Highlander. The system includes pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise controller, lane departure alarm with steering assist, lane trace assist, road sign assistance, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is available for the LE grade and higher. Rear cross-traffic alert is also available for the LE grade. Platinum and Limited have automatic braking and front and rear parking assistance. The Limited model comes with a 360-degree camera system, while the Platinum model has it as standard.
