2023 Toyota Sequoia Introduces 437 HP Hybrid Motor, Brawny Styling

The new Sequoia can lift up to 9,000 pounds.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia replaces the second generation of this three-row SUV, which dates back to 2008. This is an opportunity for the automaker to make major changes to the vehicle, both cosmetically and mechanically. These big changes are necessary because the Sequoia, the brand’s top-selling SUV in North America, is now the brand after the retirement from the Land Cruiser.

The Benefits of a New Engine and A New Platform

Toyota calls the 3.5-liter twin-turbo hybrid hybrid V6 the i-Force Max. It is standard on all 2023 Sequoia models. It produces 437 horsepower (326 Kilowatts) as well as 583 pound-feet (790 Newton meters) of torque, just like the Tundra. A 10-speed automatic is the only available gearbox.

No details are available on the fuel economy. Toyota claims that the figures are “a tremendous improvement over the prior generation,” and are 13 mpg city, 17 highway, and 15 combined for the 4X2 drivetrain.

The 2023 Sequoia rides on the same body-on-frame modular platform as the Tundra, Land Cruiser and Lexus 600. All trim levels have the option of a two- or four-wheel-drive system. Only 4WD is available for the TRD Pro package.

The Sequoia’s underpinnings include an independent front suspension as well as a multi-link layout at its back. Optional options include adaptive dampers and a load leveling air system at the rear.

The new Sequoia can haul up to 9,000 pounds (4.082 kilograms), which nearly 22 percent more than its predecessor. Optional power-folding, retracting and extending tow mirrors are available for improved visibility when pulling something. A Panoramic View Monitor provides a bird’s-eye view of the vehicle and surrounding areas when maneuvering.

What does it look like?

Exterior styling of the new Sequoia is strong and upright. It has a front end similar to the Tundra. The grille is large, but designers have given the different trim levels different mesh patterns to differentiate their styling. The TRD Pro package features large, black hexagons while the Capstone has smaller openings and a chrome finish. The headlights have a Y-shaped shape.

The fenders are muscular and have a prominent ridge at the wheel opening. The D-pillar’s base angles forward and the rear glass wraps partially around the body.

All Sequoias have three rows of seating inside. The second row can have either a captain’s chair or a bench depending on the trim level. The third row is able to slide forward and back up to 6.0 inches. It also has a shelf system at the back that allows cargo to be stacked more easily.

Pick Your Trim Level

There are five trim levels for the Sequoia: SR5, Limited and Platinum, TRD Pro, Capstone, and TRD Pro. They all come with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 tech, heated seats and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

The standard SR5 trim features an 8.0-inch infotainment screen, while the SR5 Premium increases the size of the display to 14.0 inches. The SR5 Premium also features a power-folding third row seat, hands-free tailgate opening, and 120-volt power outlets throughout the cabin and cargo area.

Both SR5 models can be purchased with the TRD Sport package. This package includes Bilstein monotube suspensions and revised tuning of the springs. These SUVs are equipped with 20-inch matte-black wheels, instead of the 18-inch standard.

The Limited grade is an upgrade to the SR5 premium with heated and ventilated front seats and heated steering wheels. Sunshades are available for the second and third rows.

TRD Offroad Package is available for the four-wheel-drive Limited and SR5 models. This package includes an 18-inch wheel, locking rear differential, multi-terrain select system, crawl control, and downhill assist control. You can also get Bilstein shocks or revised springs.

The Platinum is a better version of the Limited. It features second-row captain’s seats that are heated, ventilated, a 14 speaker stereo, panoramic moonroof and head-up display. Qi wireless charging and rain-sensing wipers. The taillights and headlights are also equipped with LED lighting.

TRD Pro is for those who really want to go off-road. The TRD Pro comes with Fox internal bypass shocks, and a 0.25 inch front skid plate. It also features a locking rear differenial and Multi-Terrain Select. There is crawl control and downhill assist control. The front grille features an LED light bar and a storage rack. For a wider stance, black 18-inch wheels are offset to give them a greater width. The package also includes dual exhaust tips. This grade is unique in that it comes with the Solar Octane exterior colour.

The range-topping Capstone is the final option. The SUV features chrome accents, and power running boards. The 22-inch wheels have a chrome finish. The interior features semi-aniline leather upholstery in a black-and white color scheme. The cabin is decorated with an American Walnut open-pore wooden trim. This model is quieter than the other grades of the Sequoia because it has sound deadening and an acoustic glass front door.

This summer, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia goes on sale. Pricing information will be available closer the launch.
