The quad exhausts indicate M5, but the Hybrid stickers and charging port state it will be a Hybrid.
According to rumors, BMW will electrify the next-generation M5. Although prototypes of the new 5 Series Sedan are still in development, our spy team has already discovered the flagship model with its quad exhaust tips. The brakes are huge, but this test vehicle is much more intriguing than your average 5er.
The sticker on the driver’s side indicating the hybrid test vehicle status of the M5 is a nightmare for purists. It is obvious that the PHEV will be visible from the flap on the driver’s side. The fuel cap on the extra 545e xDrive is approximately the same size, shape and position.
The big question: Will BMW keep the V8? If we had to place a bet, it would be a yes. Ex-M CEO Markus Flasch stated that engineers are still working on ways to reduce fuel consumption and comply with stricter emission regulations in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport. Ex-M head honcho Markus Flasch stated that both engines would live until 2030.
The polarizing Concept XM will continue to have a V8 and an electric motor. The first M car, after the iconic M1, might be able to lend its PHEV setup for the revamped M5. It is expected that the electrified SUV will have around 750 horsepower, so expect a similar output from the super sedan.
The concern about weight is obvious, considering that even the toughcore M5CS still weighs in at more than 4,000 pounds and 1,814 kilograms. Although the additional power from the electric motor will help offset some of the weight gain, we don’t expect the new M5 to be nearly as agile through corners as the Competition model.
BMW will sell the new 5 Series in 2023, when the fully-electric i5 will also be available on the market. The M5 is not expected to be on the market until 2023.
