An electric version will be available soon.
Chevrolet released a teaser video for the first electrified Corvette, a hybrid. YouTube posted a short video showing the first glimpse of the all-wheel drive coupe. A fully electric version could follow next year. General Motors President Mark Reuss stated on LinkedIn that more information, including models names, will be available at a later time.
Many speculations have been made about how Chevy would electrify Corvette in order to achieve GM’s ambitious EV goals. Details are still a mystery. The Corvette, possibly called the E-Ray, will produce 600 to 650 horsepower (between 447 and 484 Kilowatts). It would be right behind Chevy’s 670-hp Corvette Z06 (500-kW) that was introduced last October.
Chevy is likely to achieve this output by combining the existing 495-hp (369 kW) 6.2L LT2 V8 engine (from the Stingray) with an electric motor. The electric motor will power the front wheels as the video shows the Corvette’s front tires spinning in snow. It will not only be the first electrified Corvette but also the first Corvette equipped with all-wheel drive.
Although the Corvette isn’t shown in the teaser video, it looks very similar to the Z06. The Corvette is seen tearing through snow-covered tracks with ease, and then launching powder plumes into the air behind it.
Even more details are scarce about the fully-electric Corvette. The electric Corvette two-door will most likely be powered by GM’s Ultium batteries. It will also be able to produce huge horsepower and possibly motivate all four wheels.
The latest details will be revealed in the coming months. However, rumors that were already out there are beginning to become true. The hybrid Corvette was expected to arrive in 2023 at a cost of less than $100,000. Half of this is possible. The new Corvette will go on sale in 2024 as a model late next year. However, we expect confirmation to come sooner than expected.
