Geneva Motor Show: Public premiere
Hyundai announced that it will unveil its first all-electric SUV in February. It also released the first teaser. The Kona electric will be available in Europe starting in the summer 2018. This makes Hyundai “the first European automotive brand to offer an all-electric compact SUV to everyone.”
South Korean manufacturer Hyundai has revealed that the zero-emissions vehicle would be available with two powertrain options. Both will use “one of the strongest electric engines on the marketplace.” This sounds quite intriguing and surpasses initial expectations. It also promises a range of almost 292 miles (470 km) under the new WLTP regulations.
The Kona Electric design will not be surprising as it is almost identical to its ICE-powered counterparts. spy photos show. Only exception is the radiator grille. This will be replaced with a closed-off panel similar to that on the Ioniq Electric. It will house the charging point. There could be some minor changes to the rear bumper due to the absence of exhaust pipes, but nothing major.
Some sources claim that the Kona Electric will be available in the United States during the first half 2019 with a starting price of less than $40,000. The Kona Electric will only be available with the 64-kWh battery.
Hyundai proudly claims it is the first European carmaker to combine two of the most popular industry trends, electric mobility and SUV design. Hyundai claims it is “at the forefront” of eco mobility and offers the widest range of powertrains.
The Kona Electric’s specifications will be made public on February 27th, when it will make its online debut. This will be followed by a public premier at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Keep checking back for more information and be sure to watch the livestream of the debut date.
