In 2020, the trends will not change.

“Any customer can have any color car he likes, as long as it’s black.” These were Henry Ford’s words when the Ford Model T was in production. It is believed that he relayed them to the dealers. The times have changed dramatically since then, but design and color are now more important than ever as they are the main selling point of a new vehicle.

Black isn’t the most popular car color. Axalta’s 68th annual Global Automotive Colour Popularity Report shows the three most popular colors in the world. White is, surprise, the most commonly purchased color for automotive purposes globally for ten consecutive years.

Axalta is a world-leading supplier of powder and liquid coatings. They collect data from all countries that produce cars and compile a list of the most in-demand colors worldwide. This information is provided to manufacturers in order to allow them to “observe trends and patterns across different markets and around the world.”

According to this year’s survey, 38% of manufactured vehicles are white painted. 19% of these cars are black and 15% are gray. Surprisingly silver cars are still in high demand, while black cars are still popular in the luxury segment. The top four most popular colors account for an average 81 percent market share worldwide.

Nancy Lockhart, Axalta’s global color product manager, stated that “the consumer buying trends reflected in this report drive our development and innovation of innovative colors for future,”. We are happy to share this data and to combine our industry-leading colour technology, deep market knowledge, and trend data to help our customers bring dynamic colors to life.

In 1953, Axalta released its first annual report.
