A 100-Piece Zagato-Designed Toyota MR2 is Up for Auction in Japan

The MR2’s authentic Italian escapade is now available for purchase.

Zagato is most likely well-known for its work with many automakers over its more than 100 year history, especially with Aston Martin or the legendary Vantage range. Did you know that an Italian coachbuilder collaborated with Toyota to create a special MR2 in 2000?

The VM180 Zagato. The VM180 Zagato is a rare model based on the MR-S, but with many modifications by the Italian company. Toyota Modelista International (TMI) built only 100 units. They sold them in Japan in 2001. One of those hundred units is currently up for sale at -BH Auction.

The Zagato design elements can be seen on the exterior, making the VM180 look very different to the original Toyota MR2. The front-end is dominated by three-tier headlights, surrounded by a faintly blue element and large air intakes at the lower bumper. It’s quite polarizing to say the least. The rear end looks just as intriguing, with its vertical taillights and small diffuser that has a large exhaust outlet.

However, the changes to the cabin are not too significant. You’ll only notice the new steering wheel, and two-tone leather seats in red and black leather.

The VM180 Zagato, behind the seats, also received minor upgrades. The original 1.8-liter engine was tuned to produce an additional 15 horses. This gives it 155 horsepower (116 Kilowatts) as well as 131 pound-feet of torque (178 Newton-meters). The mill is connected with a 5-speed automatic transmission.

We know that only 100 VM180s were ever produced in Japan so this Zagato-designed MR2 will be more expensive than a regular mid-engine Toyota. You can find the details of the auction at BH Auction if you have been searching for a lightweight sportscar with a touch more rarity.
